: About the ESL Program |

Established in 1975, the American Language Center (ALC) is the UCLA Extension's department that offers English language training to speakers of other languages. The ALC strives to create a learning environment where students and professionals feel comfortable in improving their English language proficiency. ALC instructors and staff are committed to the highest level of instruction and educational service to their students. Instructors use a variety of modern teaching strategies and techniques to ensure that every individual student maximizes their learning potential. ALC students are encouraged to speak English as much as possible, with both classmates and native speakers. All ALC students have access to such on-campus learning facilities as the language/computer lab with Internet access and the UCLA library - one of the three largest libraries in North America. ALC students receive a "recreation card" to gain access the many UCLA recreational facilities, including tennis courts, swimming pools, soccer and track facilities, rock climbing and other athletic resources. ALC students also receive both academic counseling and visa advising from trained on-campus professionals. The ALC is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

Students enrolled in advanced-level Academic Intensive English programs may be eligible to enroll in UCLA credit courses and study with other UCLA students while continuing their Intensive English program studies.

Student Countries of Origin |

ALC welcomes students from over 50 countries around the world. On average, most ALC students are from Japan (30%), followed by Korea (23%), Taiwan (15%), Turkey (4%), Italy (3%), France (3%), Germany (3%), Spain (3%), Argentina (3%), Brazil (3%) and other countries (10%).

Faculty Qualifications |

Most ALC instructors have Master's degrees in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and many of them have lived in other countries for extended periods of time. Having this experience, ALC teachers are sensitive to the needs of international students and readily make themselves available to listen to students' concerns and offer advice.

| The ALC will provide students with information about available housing options however the ALC office cannot make students' housing arrangements. It is the students' responsibility to make their individual housing arrangements. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly. |

| The American Language Center is located in Westwood Village, one of the most attractive and safest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Best known as home of the 419-acre UCLA campus, Westwood also boasts many charming restaurants and boutiques, as well as classic Art Deco movie theaters that are often sites of many movie premiers. The ALC is located minutes by bus from such well-known Los Angeles locations as the Hollywood walk of fame, extravagant Beverly Hills and the beautiful, pristine Pacific Ocean beaches. Besides being the epicenter of the American film industry, Los Angeles - the second-largest city in the United States and nicknamed the "City of Angels" - is alive with fantastic theater, ample music and concert venues, world-class museums (in fact, more than any other city in the United States), first-rate shopping, thrilling amusement parks and extensive outdoor recreation opportunities. L.A. is called home by people from more than 140 countries and who speak over 224 different languages. The city's patchwork of colorful ethnic neighborhoods - from Chinatown, Koreatown and Thai Town to Little Ethiopia, Historic Filipinotown and Little Armenia - demonstrates the diverse cultural character that Los Angeles is known for. Sports enthusiasts are quick to learn Los Angeles is home to an extensive list of celebrated professional sports teams, including: the L.A. Dodgers and the Anaheim Angels (baseball); the L.A. Lakers, the L.A. Clippers and the L.A. Sparks (basketball); the L.A. Kings and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks (hockey); and the L.A. Galaxy and C.D. Chivas USA (soccer). Additionally, ALC students can pursue virtually every imaginable sport year-round on their own, ranging from soccer, tennis and golf to hiking and surfing. Public transportation is convenient within the Los Angeles metropolitan area with buses, subways and trains available to easily transport visitors and residents to such well-known destinations as Disneyland and Universal Studios in addition to San Diego and stunning Santa Barbara. For weekend excursions, residents often drive and visit the perennially-famous Las Vegas, picturesque San Francisco, the celebrated Yosemite National Park and the majestic Grand Canyon. |
