The Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP) is offered in 10-week sessions during the fall, winter and spring, and 6- or 12-week sessions during the summer. Regardless of course length, students enrolled in the program receive approximately 23 hours of classroom instruction per week.
The program is offered at 7 levels of difficulty, from Beginner to Advanced. Placement in these levels is determined by the results of a Placement Test and an Interview students take upon their arrival at the ALC.
The AIEP is designed to academically prepare students to enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an American college or university; the program is also designed for those students who wish to study English for personal or professional enrichment. Students at all levels of instruction receive challenging instruction focused on improving their speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills through pair work, group work, communicative games and video/computer-based instruction. Students at the high-intermediate and advanced levels have the opportunity to choose from such elective classes as TOEFL Preparation, Business Communications, American Slang, English through Movies and others. Students at the advanced level have the opportunity to enroll in UCLA undergraduate classes while continuing to study in the AIEP program. Class sizes generally range from 14 to 18 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. |
